Road blockade for Roman script continues, TIPRA Motha accused of violating agreement

Agartala, Mar 22 (UNI) Tipra Students' Federation (TSF) backed by BJP’s ally in Tripura government TIPRA Motha resumed road blockade of national highways in Baramura and Bishramganj from Saturday morning demanding Roman script for Kokborok language.
TSF launched the blockade on Friday in multiple locations across the state including VIP Road in the city, which triggered serious resentment among the people as it prevented the movement of examinees, ambulances, school buses, and even the Ministers for the whole day.
TIPRA Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman openly supported the movement and sat in the road blockade despite being a partner in the state government. He criticized the ruling BJP for not accepting the demand for Roman script for Kokborok. He said the delay in resolving the matter hurt the sentiment of the majority of Kokborok-speaking communities.
“It seems the government is trying to force Bengali script for Kokborok although earlier language commission had recommended Roman script and majority Kokborok speaking people want it,” Pradyot underlined, adding that his party wouldn’t compromise with the interest of the indigenous communities and for which Motha allied with BJP.
Meanwhile, TSF leaders in a press conference reiterated that the movement will be intensified further in different forms and the blockade will continue until they are allowed to write Kokborok in the Roman script. However, they offered to sit in a dialogue for a positive solution to the issue and other contentious demands of the indigenous people and organizations.
On the other, opposition political parties questioned the validity of the tripartite agreement of TIPRA Motha signed with the Central government and state government last year where they promised not to resort to any agitation. No step should be taken under the name of the movement that causes public suffering or disrupts essential services, but launching a road blockade that violated the clause and prevention of emergency services was an act of inhumanity.
The agitators have been preventing ambulances, train and car passengers, pedestrians, and even patients from traveling by their vehicles. The protesters reportedly stopped two ambulances in Baramura on the National Highway and raised communal slogans to press for their demand.
The Congress accused the BJP of instigating the situation and unnecessarily leading to chaos. The party leader D C Hrangkhawl said, “The tripartite agreement signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, it was assured that all possible efforts would be made for the development of Tripura's indigenous people. But no effective step has been taken to fulfill the demands and rather try to be hostile to the situation.”
Moreover, the administration remained silent about the public suffering and disruption of essential services. The statement of the Chief Minister in the assembly on the issue didn’t indicate any solution, instead creating more confusion among the indigenous communities where he questioned why not Devanagari script for Kokborok, Hrangkhawl added.
