Route march conducted by Forest officials in Manipur

Imphal, May 7 (UNI) The Central Forest Division of Manipur has conducted a route march along the foothills of Langol Reserved Forest around Khonghampat area to assess human-induced pressures affecting it, an official said on Wednesday.
Such pressures include trespassing, unauthenticated entry into the forest areas, littering leading to environmental degradation, small-scale destruction of minerals or other resources without proper authorisation, illegal tree felling and illegal cultivation in Reserve Forest Area.
These activities pose significant threats to the forest ecosystem. The team emphasised that any illegal occupation within the reserved forest contravenes Section 26 of the Indian Forest Act. 1927, the Manipur Forest Rules 2021, and Sec 2 of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. Such Such encroachments are punishable under law.
Indian forest Act 1927 prohibits any fresh clearing trespasses or pastures cattle, or pastures cattle to trespass, fells, girdles, lops, taps or burns any tree or strips off the bark or leaves from or otherwise damages the same, clears or breaks up any land for cultivation or any other purpose.
Any violation of the Act shall be punishable with imprisonment for six months, or with fine. or with both, in addition to compensating for damage done to the forest, the official said.
To enhance monitoring and prevention of illegal activities, the team proposed establishing additional check-posts along the boundaries of Langol RF.
DFO Vikram Surest Nadhe directed the Range forest Officers to conduct a fresh assessment of encroachers to safeguard the forest and to conduct patrolling on a regular basis and to take strict action against elements engaging in illegal trespass, illegal cultivation in Reserve Forest areas and breaking of land.
The Central Forest Division has appealed to the general public to inform them of any new encroachments or illegal activities in the reserved forests to aid in conservation efforts. UNI NS SSP
