Selena Quintanilla's family expresses gratitude after Yolanda Saldívar is denied parole

Houston, Mar 28 (UNI) The family of American singer-songwriter Selena Quintanilla, also known as "Queen of Tejano Music", has expressed profound relief following the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles' decision to deny parole to Yolanda Saldívar, the woman convicted of her murder.
The ruling, issued on Thursday, March 27, ensures that Saldívar will remain incarcerated until her next parole review in March 2030.
Shortly after the announcement, Selena's official Instagram account released a statement on behalf of the family, "Today, we are grateful that the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has chosen to deny parole for Yolanda Saldívar."
They continued, "While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon."
The family went on to celebrate Selena's lasting impact, describing her as a beacon of love, music and inspiration. "One of love, music, and inspiration," adding that the "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" singer "lived with joy, gave selflessly, and continues to uplift generations with her voice and her spirit."
The statement concluded by thanking fans for their "unwavering support throughout the years."
In an official statement to PEOPLE, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles outlined the severity of the crime as the primary reason for denying Saldívar's parole, "After a thorough consideration of all available information, which included any confidential interviews conducted, it was the parole panels determination to deny parole to Yolanda Saldivar and set her next parole review for March 2030."
The board cited the "nature of the offense" for its decision. "The record indicates that the instant offense has elements of brutality, violence, assaultive behavior or conscious selection of victim’s vulnerability indicating a conscious disregard for the lives, safety, or property of others, such that the offender poses a continuing threat to public safety," the board said in part.
On March 31, 1995, Saldívar- who was Selena's fan club president and boutique manager, fatally shot the 23-year-old singer in Corpus Christ, Texas motel after being confronted over allegations of embezzling more than 30,000 dollars.
Selena, only 23 years old, had visited Saldívar to retrieve financial documents when she was shot in the back while attempting to flee. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to severe blood loss and cardiac arrest.
Following the murder, Saldívar barricaded herself inside her truck for nine hours, threatening to take her own life before ultimately surrendering to authorities. She was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, with parole eligibility after 30 years.
Ahead of the parole board's decision, former Nueces County District Attorney Carlos Valdez, who prosecuted the high-profile case, said granting Saldívar parole would be “a serious mistake,” KHOU reports.
“Lord knows what will happen if she is released," Valdez said. "Based on what I've seen so far, I think it would be a serious mistake to grant her parole. I believe, I really believe, that the safest for Yolanda would probably be where she is.” UNI XC SSP
