Special drive launched in Kakinada to eradicate child labour

Kakinada, June 17 (UNI) District child welfare officer Ch Venkatrao said that a special drive was launched in the city to eradicate child labour.

The drive will continue till the month end and officials conduct thorough inspection of the shops and business establishments to identify the child labour, if any, and initiate action against the employers.
The child labour will be enrolled in schools duly counseling their parents. If orphans, they will be admitted into residential schools enlisting the support of philanthropists, he added.
He was addressing a special awareness session organised by the Adabala Trust in Ramanaiahpeta area here on Tuesday on eradication of child labour system.
At the tender age when the children have to go to schools carrying slates and slate pencils in their hands, the parents were sending them to do hard labour in bricks units, hotels and other business establishments owing to poverty and illiteracy.

It is the constitutional right of children to have good health and education. If children are employed, the shop owners are liable for punishment under the child labour eradication act of 1986, he added.
Adabala Rathna Prasad chaired the meeting.
