Strong winds lash Hamirpur district, cause heavy damage

Hamirpur (Himachal), Apr 17 (UNI) Heavy damage to government and private property was reported as strong winds lashed Hamirpur district on Wednesday night, leading to trees falling at many places, snapping power lines, and damaging houses and other properties.
According to information received at the District Emergency Operation Center of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), an eight-year-old child died, while his father was seriously injured due to a tree falling on a slum located near the Mini Secretariat of Barsar.
Deputy Commissioner and DDMA Chairman Amarjit Singh said the child of a migrant labourer died in this incident. This child's father suffered serious injuries.
The Deputy Commissioner said with trees falling at many places, the power lines and poles suffered heavy damage.
He said about 1,347 DTRs (distribution transformers) were affected across the district. Power supply to most of these has been restored.
Traffic was also disrupted at some places due to falling trees, but the roads were restored immediately.
A kutcha house was partially damaged due to the storm, causing a loss of about Rs.60,000. Two pucca houses have also suffered damage worth about Rs.90,000 and two gaushalas have suffered damage worth about Rs 23,000.
The Deputy Commissioner said that the officers of the Agriculture, Horticulture and Revenue departments have been instructed to go to the field and assess the damage to various crops and other properties and send the report immediately.
