Telangana: SLBC tunnel rescue operation intensified

Nagarkurnool, Apr 16 (UNI) The excavation of soil in the SLBC (Srisailam Left Bank Canal) tunnel rescue operation will continue for another 50 mt, as efforts to remove rocks have been accelerated.
Special Officer Shivshankar Loteti held a review meeting on Wednesday at the SLBC tunnel site in Domalapenta village of Amrabad mandal, Nagarkurnool district.
The meeting included representatives from Singareni Mines Rescue, SDRF, South Central Railway, Jaypee Company’s Senior Project Engineer Sanjay Kumar Singh, and other senior officials and rescue team members, an official statement said.
Speaking after the review, Shivshankar Loteti stated that rescue operations are being carried out in full coordination between central and state government teams. These efforts are being guided by experts in tunnel construction to ensure maximum efficiency and safety.
He explained that since the day of the accident, operations have progressed rapidly to locate those still trapped inside the tunnel. Current operations are focused on excavating an additional 50 meters in length and 3 meters in height. Heavy machinery, including excavators and bobcats, is being used to remove large rocks from the tunnel.
Excavated soil is being transported out via conveyor belts, and cut parts of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) are being removed using a loco train. The de-watering process is also ongoing without interruption.
Loteti further stated that the rescue efforts are being conducted under the instructions of the state government, and regular updates are being submitted to higher authorities.
The SLBC tunnel accident, which occurred on February 22, resulted in eight workers becoming trapped. So far, two bodies have been recovered and handed over to their families. Authorities continue to intensify efforts to locate and rescue the remaining six workers, mobilizing all available resources for the operation.
