TN: 34 injured in annual ‘Manjuvirattu’ event

Sivaganga, Mar 24 (UNI) Thirty four persons, including bull tamers and spectators were injured in the annual ‘Manjuvirattu’(Bull chasing) another form Jallikattu event held at Nedumaram village in Thirupathur taluk of Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu on Monday.
Official sources said the event was organized as part of the ‘Panguni’ festival of the Arulmigu Malayarasi Amman Temple in which 500-odd bulls were let into the open ground.
The grievously injured were treated at the government hospital at Thirupathur and Sivaganga.
Manjuvirattu is dissimilar to Jallikattu events being held across Tamil Nadu every year.
In Jallikattu, the ferocious bulls would be let out one by one through ‘Vaadi Vaasal’ (a narrow passage) and the bull tamers would attempt to tame the bulls. Barricades will be erected on either side of the passage to protect the spectators.
However, in the Manjuvirattu event, the bulls would be unleashed enmasse in an open ground to be tamed by agile youths.
