TT legend Sharath Kamal bids emotional adieu

Chennai, Mar 29 (UNI) Indian Table Tennis legend Achanta Sharath Kamal brought the curtain down on his illustrious career in an emotional farewell at the WTT Star Contender Chennai 2025 presented by Indian Oil on Saturday.
Sharath's swansong came after a defeat to compatriot Snehit Suravajjula, marking the end of a golden era in Indian table tennis.
In a poignant moment following the match, Sharath engaged in a spirited exhibition contest against Egypt’s Omar Assar before addressing an emotional gathering.
He expressed his desire to continue contributing to the sport in various roles, whether as an administrator, coach, mentor, or senior advisor.
"Somewhere down the line, I felt it’s enough, and I wanted to explore the possibility of giving back to the sport from the other side of the court. I have done my part as a player, and I feel I have contributed enough to the country in that capacity. Now, I want to contribute in a different way," said Sharath, extending gratitude to his family, friends, fans, and key stakeholders, including Indian Oil, SDAT, Stupa Sports Analytics, Ultimate Table Tennis, TTFI, and ITTF.
Meanwhile, 24-year-old Manav Thakkar created history by becoming the first Indian male paddler to reach the semifinals of a WTT Star Contender event. Thakkar displayed remarkable grit, clinching consecutive five-game thrillers against Germany’s Andre Bertelsmeier and South Korea’s Olympic medallist Lim Jong-hoon. However, Snehit’s spirited run came to an end against France’s Thibault Poret in the quarterfinals.
The doubles finals witnessed high-octane clashes, with South Korea’s Lim Jong-hoon and An Jae-hyun overpowering top seeds Tomokazu Harimoto and Sora Matsushima 3-1 to lift the Men’s Doubles crown. The Women’s Doubles Final saw Japan’s Miwa Harimoto and Miyuu Kihara edge out Shin Yu-bin and Ryu Hanna in a thrilling decider, sealing an 11-5 win in the final game.
WTT Star Contender Chennai 2025, organised by Stupa Sports Analytics and Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), features top-ranked global players battling for 600 ranking points and a USD 275,000 prize purse.
In Women’s Singles, Shin Yu-bin cruised into the semifinals with a commanding victory over Miyu Nagasaki, while Honoka Hashimoto, Miwa Harimoto, and Kim Nayeong also advanced with impressive performances.
The tournament will conclude on Sunday, with the Finals set for Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, and Mixed Doubles. Fans can catch the action live on SonyLiv, with additional matches streamed on WTT’s official YouTube channel.
