UP best in terms of protection from lightning

Lucknow, Apr 16 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the safest state in India regarding lightning-related fatalities, and it recorded a death rate of just 0.14 per lakh population, official sources said here on Wednesday.
Sources said that the death rate in UP is significantly lower than in Karnataka (0.15), Bihar (0.31), Madhya Pradesh (0.31), Odisha (0.35) and Jharkhand (1.01).
"These numbers reflect the effectiveness of the Yogi Adityanath government's proactive disaster management policies and wide-reaching public awareness campaigns," they said.
Sources said that a comparative analysis highlights UP's remarkable performance. "For instance, while Jharkhand reports a mortality rate of 1.01 per lakh population, UP's rate is nearly seven times lower. Similarly, UP fares far better than states like Bihar, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh in terms of lightning safety. Experts attribute this success to the state’s robust weather forecasting system and rapid alert mechanisms, particularly in rural areas," they said.
Sources said that under the leadership of CM Yogi, the state government implemented a comprehensive strategy to tackle lightning-related hazards. "Key initiatives included real-time weather alerts to every village, construction of shelter homes and intensive awareness drives on lightning safety," they said.
Sources said that the Disaster Management Department also trained villagers on preventive measures, such as avoiding shelter under trees during storms and seeking safe cover, which has had a visible impact.
Sources said that the experts believe that UP's innovative use of technology in disaster management has laid the foundation for a model that other states can emulate.
