Mumbai, Apr 10 (UNI) In what promises to be the most highly-anticipated encounter in the world of chess, newly-crowned world champion Dommaraju Gukesh is set to take on world no 1 Magnus Carlsen at the prestigious Norway Chess 2025 tournament to be held in Stavanger from May 26 to June 6.
Addressing a curtain-raiser event jointly hosted by Norway Chess and the Sports Journalists’ Association of Mumbai (SJAM) here on Thursday, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand threw his weight behind Gukesh and predicted a thrilling battle between the Indian teenager and the Norwegian maestro.
"I expect a very exciting battle," Anand said. "Gukesh will not lack motivation or the determination to go after Magnus Carlsen. But Magnus is also highly motivated by the challenge of playing against our young players. I’ve seen him in Kolkata and in the World Rapid Blitz—he eagerly looks forward to these match-ups. So, we have the perfect storm. I think we have the right to expect some great battles."
