New Delhi, Apr 3 (UNI) Union Minister and BJP President J P Nadda on Thursday said the basic objective of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill-2025 is to bring about reforms and ensure proper management of Waqf property.
Speaking on the Bill in Rajya Sabha, he said, "I stand in support of the (Waqf) Bill as its sole purpose is to bring reforms in managing the Waqf properties."
He further said that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is in the nation's interest and the Opposition is trying to derail and divert the issue.
"I want to tell the people of the country through this House that the government, led by PM Narendra Modi, is moving ahead by fully following democratic norms," he said.
Replying to the Opposition' questions over JPC, Nadda said, "the Opposition asked for the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), and we formed it. In 2013, when the JPC was formed for the Waqf bill, it had only 13 members. However, under the Modi government, the JPC formed had 31 members.
"The JPC held 36 meetings, and more than 200 hours have been spent on its activities, directly and indirectly" he added.
The Lok Sabha passed the Bill in the early hours of Thursday and a discussion in the Rajya Sabha is going on.
