205 B.Ed colleges barred from admitting students for 2026-28 session

Kolkata, Nov 5 (UNI) West Bengal Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay on Thursday said 205 B.Ed colleges across the state have been barred from admitting students for the 2026-28 academic session after failing to meet the prescribed infrastructure and academic standards.
Baba Saheb Ambedkar Education University (BSAEU), the affiliating authority for B.Ed colleges in the state, has published a list of institutions found ineligible for renewal of affiliation for the 2026-27 academic year. These institutions have failed to adhere to the mandatory government and administrative requirements, the varsity said in a notification.
Consequently, they have been directed not to carry on with fresh admissions to their B.Ed courses for the 2026-28 session.
However, they have been allowed to address their infrastructure and faculty-related deficiencies to become eligible for admissions in the subsequent 2027-29 session.
Explaining the action, Chattopadhyay said: "Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had said that education would not be allowed to become a commodity under any circumstances and that its quality must be maintained. Accordingly, the Higher Education and Technical Education departments jointly conducted an intensive inspection drive at B.Ed, ITI, polytechnic and pharmacy colleges."
The minister said that following the first round of inspections, 156 B.Ed colleges were directly allowed to admit students for the 2026-28 session. Another 415 colleges were served show-cause notices, giving them 21 days to rectify infrastructure-related deficiencies.
“Of these, nine colleges did not respond to the notices. The remaining institutions were subjected to a second round of inspections, conducted by an entirely new team of inspectors instead of those who had carried out the initial assessment,” Chattopadhyaya said.
Following the second round, 237 colleges were found to have fulfilled the prescribed requirements and were allowed to begin admissions for the 2026-28 session from November 4.
“However, after the final assessment, it was found that 205 colleges fell short of the required standards, prompting the university to suspend their admissions for the current session,” he added.
“This is not a punitive action, and so we have not de-affiliated any college. If they improve their infrastructure, then they will be allowed to function from the next academic session,” he said.
The minister also outlined similar action taken against other professional educational institutions as part of the government's drive to improve academic standards.
Of the 265 ITI institutions inspected, 14 have been de-affiliated.
Admissions have been suspended at 38 of the 134 pharmacy colleges, while one of the 74 polytechnic institutions has also been barred from admitting students.
The minister said the measures were aimed at maintaining the quality of education and shutting down institutions operating as "shops selling degrees".
