Abdullah Sohail demands withdrawal of Waqf Amendment Act, joins all-party protest in Warangal

Warangal (Telangana), May 3 (UNI) Senior BRS leader Shaik Abdullah Sohail on Saturday demanded the immediate repeal of the Waqf Amendment Act, calling it a deliberate attempt to undermine the autonomy of Waqf Boards and seize control of Muslim community assets.
He made these remarks while participating in an all-party protest held in Warangal, following a nationwide call by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB).
“This is not merely a legal amendment—it is a direct assault on our constitutional rights, religious institutions, and the welfare structures built over generations for the Muslim community,” Sohail said. “Waqf Boards manage properties meant for orphans, the poor, education, and religious services. This Act dilutes their authority and opens the door to political interference and encroachment.”
Emphasising that the issue transcends party politics, Sohail stated, “Today, I speak not just as a BRS leader but as a member of the Muslim community. Whether one belongs to the BRS, Congress, or the Left, there is complete unity in opposing this unjust law. Every secular-minded citizen is standing with us in this fight.”
He warned that the amendment endangers thousands of Waqf properties and could lead to the erosion of vital community services. “If not repealed, this law will result in the loss of land, disruption of essential services, and further marginalisation of Muslims,” he said.
Sohail also reiterated that the BRS had opposed the Waqf Amendment Act both in Parliament and in public forums and assured that the party would continue to support democratic protests against it, especially in Telangana.
The protest saw the participation of Telangana State Haj Committee Chairman Khusro Pasha Biyabani, Warangal Deputy Mayor Masood Ahmed, and leaders from Jamaat-e-Islami, Jamiatul Ulema, and various secular organisations. Protesters carried placards reading “Withdraw Waqf Amendment Act”, “Protect Muslim Institutions”, and “We Stand With AIMPLB”, reflecting widespread discontent.
Speakers condemned the Centre for passing the amendment without adequate consultation and said it violated Article 26 of the Constitution, which guarantees religious denominations the right to manage their own affairs.
