Ahlawat’s blazing 65 sparks India’s late push in Asian Games golf

Aichi-Nagoya, Oct 2 (UNI): Veer Ahlawat turned on the heat with a five-under 65 to emerge as India’s brightest performer in the men’s golf competition and climb to 10th place after the penultimate round of the Asian Games here on Friday.
Ahlawat, who began the day 18th, produced a decisive surge with six birdies against just one bogey at the Kasugai Country Club East Course. Four of those birdies came on the back nine as he closed with a flourish to move to six-under 204.
The 2024 DP World PGTI Order of Merit champion is now six shots behind Korea’s Joohyung Kim, who leads the individual competition, setting up an intriguing final round.
Ahlawat’s charge, however, could not prevent India from slipping to sixth in the men’s team competition. India were on 11-under 409, while Korea strengthened their grip at the top with 20-under 400.
The team standings are decided by the best two scores from each round, leaving India with a sizeable deficit to bridge in the final round.
Saptak Talwar, who had started strongly with rounds of 66 and 68, carded a one-over 71 on Friday and remained in the individual medal hunt at five-under 205, one shot behind Ahlawat in 11th.
Yuvraj Sandhu also returned a 71 and was tied 23rd at one-over 211.
While the men face an uphill battle, India’s women have put themselves firmly in medal contention.
Pranavi Urs continued her stunning run, holding a three-shot lead in the individual event at 15-under 195 after three rounds.
India are also second in the women’s team event at 11-under 409, just four shots behind leaders China.
Diksha Dagar and Aditi Ashok were tied 18th at five-over 215.
With the final round remaining, Ahlawat’s 65 has provided India with momentum in the men’s competition, while Pranavi’s commanding position gives the country a strong medal prospect in the women’s event.
