Amid scorching heat, several TN dists gets welcome summer rains

Chennai, May 16 (UNI) With several districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, North,
North Coastal and North Interior districts reeling under scorching heat wave over the
last few days at the peak of the summer season, sudden rains following a new system
in the bay brought welcome rains in many districts on Friday evening.
The sudden rains, accompanied by gutsy winds, which lasted for nearly an hour in Ghat
regions, and some Cauvery delta districts, brought the much needed respite to the people
who were in the grip of intense heat wave with the Mercury level recording in excess of
100 Deg F in many parts of the State, including Chennai.
The summer showers is likely to persist for the next couple of days, according to IMD.
Amid the searing heat that caused discomfiture to the people, a system has formed over
the Bay, which could turn out to be a Cyclone based on the weather movement in the coming
days, bringing the much needed relief with heavy summer showers.
Thanks to the formation of system, there was marginal dip in temperatures in many districts,
including Chennai and its suburbs.
Met office said five districts recorded temperatures in excess of 100 Deg F today as against
nearly 10-15 districts over the last few days, as the summer peaked in the State.
Met office on Friday evening said rainfall occurred at isolated places over Tamil Nadu and at
a few places over South Tamilnadu and at isolated places over North Tamil Nadu, while dry
weather prevailed over Puducherry and Karaikal area.
Maximum temperatures were above normal by 2-3 Deg C at isolated places over Tamilnadu.
Generally near normal over rest Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area.
They were in the range 34-40 Deg C over North Interior Tamilnadu; 37-40 Deg C over South
Interior Tamilnadu; 34-40 Deg C over North Coastal Tamilnadu, Puducherry, Karaikal area;
35-36 Deg C over South Coastal Tamilnadu and 18-27 Deg C over hilly areas, which received
sudden copious rains this evening.
Met office said conditions are favorable for further advance of southwest Monsoon over some
more parts of South Arabian Sea, Maldives and Comorin area; South Bay of Bengal, remaining
parts of Andaman Islands and Andaman Sea; and some parts of central Bay of Bengal during
the next 2-3 days.
Yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over southeast Bay of Bengal between 3.1 & 5.8 km
above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height persists.
An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over west central Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Coastal
Andhra Pradesh at 1.5 km above mean sea level.
The forecast for the next seven days is light to moderate rain at a few places with thunderstorm
and lightning with gusty winds speed reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places is likely to occur
over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal area.
Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal,
Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur and Tiruvannamalai districts.
Heavy rain is also likely to occur at isolated places over Tiruchirappalli, Kallakurichi, Perambalur,
Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Nagapattinam districts, coming
under Cauvery delta region and Karaikal area.
On Sunday, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai,
Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Kallakurichi, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Tirupattur districts and Karaikal area.
On Monday, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Cuddalore,
Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem and Erode districts and Puducherry, while on Tuesday heavy rain is
likely to occur at isolated places over Nilgiris, Erode, Salem and Ghat areas of Coimbatore districts.
It said there would be gradual fall in maximum temperature at a few pockets over Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area till May 20.
The forecast for Chennai city and its neighbourhood is that the maximum temperature would be
around 36-37 Deg C.
The sky condition will be partly cloudy with light rain likely in some areas.
Meanwhile, private weather blogger Pradeep John said peak summer season, which will last till
May 29, has virtually come to an end thanks to the formation of a system.
He said Chennai city and neighbouring districts is unlikely to record temperatures in excess
of 100 Deg F in the coming days, a pattern seen in 2004, 2018 and 2022 in the last 25 years.
