An embrace before battle: Jamil and Ancelotti share special moment

Kolkata, Oct 2 (UNI) Brazil’s press conference was almost over when Khalid Jamil entered the room. Carlo Ancelotti was answering his final questions, speaking in the measured, unhurried manner that has accompanied him through three decades at football’s summit.
Jamil, whose own media duties were next, stayed to listen. When Ancelotti rose from his chair, the two coaches met on the podium. There was a warm embrace, a brief exchange of words and a wish of good luck from the Italian. Then Brazil left the stage and India took its place.
For a few seconds, the enormous distance between their footballing worlds seemed to disappear.
Ancelotti’s career has been measured in Champions Leagues, league titles and nights inside the game’s most imposing arenas. Jamil’s has been built through persistence across Indian football: smaller grounds, longer journeys, opportunities earned slowly and a historic I-League triumph with Aizawl that remains one of the country’s great domestic stories. One arrived in Kolkata as perhaps the most decorated coach of his generation; the other as the first Indian in more than a decade to
lead the men’s national team.
On Friday, they stood not as master and apprentice, or celebrity and admirer, but as two national coaches preparing for the same match.
That image carried particular weight because Brazil’s place in India has always been both intimate and distant. The Selecao have lived in Indian homes for generations, arriving through World Cup broadcasts and stories of Pele, Zico, Romário, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. Their canary-yellow shirt became familiar even though the senior team had never played India.
Ancelotti appeared conscious of that inheritance. “It is an honour for us to be here with the national team. We know how much this region loves the national team and football. We are happy to be here to play against India and show the quality of our players,” he said.
Marquinhos called the welcome “a golden opportunity” and “a very big motivation”. The affection was unmistakable. Yet Jamil’s task is to ask India to suspend it for 90 minutes, the AIFF sources said.
“They are the best team. They are known as the best of the best,” he said when it was his turn before the microphones. The admiration was genuine, but so was the responsibility. India will not approach Saturday as spectators fortunate enough to share the grass with Brazil. They must find a way to resist them.
Anwar Ali reduced that challenge to its human essentials: control the emotion, trust the preparation and remain calm. “Because everyone knows how Brazil play. So, we just have to keep calm in the field. And deal with the pressure.”
The ranking table will restore the distance on Saturday: Brazil fifth, India 138th. The dugouts will
be separated, loyalties declared and every decision judged by the scoreboard.
Friday offered something gentler. Before the noise of a historic night, two coaches with little in common beyond their profession met in the middle. Ancelotti wished Jamil well, Jamil accepted
the gesture, and Indian football briefly saw one of its own standing beside one of the game’s
giants – not asking for an audience, but preparing to oppose him.
