Ankush Panghal punches his way to Asian Games gold in men’s 80kg

Nagoya, Oct 2 (UNI): Indian boxer Ankush Panghal capped a remarkable Asian Games campaign with a hard-fought gold medal in the men’s 80kg category, defeating South Korea’s Kim Min-Seong in the final here on Friday.
Panghal prevailed on a 4-1 split decision after three closely contested rounds, adding another major title to his rapidly growing medal cabinet.
The 21-year-old Haryana boxer, who had won Commonwealth Games gold two months ago, showed composure under pressure to overcome Kim in a bout that saw both fighters trade attacking combinations and counter-punches.
Panghal made an aggressive start and landed several clean blows early in the opening round. Kim responded strongly, but the Indian managed to edge the round 4-1 on the judges' cards.
The second round saw Kim attempt to take control, forcing Panghal back and looking to pin him against the ropes. Panghal, however, relied on his counter-attacking game and landed enough telling punches to take the round unanimously.
With the lead in hand, Panghal adopted a more measured approach in the final round, making Kim chase him around the ring and avoiding unnecessary exchanges.
The strategy paid off as Panghal retained his advantage to secure a 4-1 verdict and the Asian Games gold.
His victory came after an impressive run through the competition. He had assured himself of a medal with a 5-0 unanimous decision over Tajikistan's Nekruz Salimov in the quarterfinals before producing one of the campaign's notable comebacks in the semifinal.
Panghal recovered from losing the opening round to Uzbekistan's reigning 75kg world champion Fazliddin Erkinboev and eventually won the semifinal 4-1.
The gold medal further underlined Panghal's rapid rise after his Commonwealth Games triumph and made him one of the standout performers of India's boxing campaign in Aichi-Nagoya.
