Archers storm into semifinals, India eye multiple medals on Day 8

Aichi-Nagoya, Sep 27 (UNI) India strengthened its medal prospects at the Asian Games here on Sunday as both recurve teams advanced to the semifinals, while the mixed teams in recurve and compound also booked places in the last four on a busy Day 8.
The Indian men’s recurve team defeated China 5-1 in the quarterfinals, while the women’s team produced an even more emphatic 6-0 victory over Chinese Taipei to enter the semifinals.
Dhiraj Bommadevara and Kumkum Mohod added another semifinal berth in mixed recurve, defeating Vietnam 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
In compound mixed team, Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav also progressed to the last four after beating Kazakhstan 159-154.
India’s compound men’s and women’s teams too advanced to the semifinals, where they will face the Republic of Korea in the medal rounds on September 30.
The strong showing in archery came as India continued to build medal opportunities across disciplines.
In badminton, 19-year-old Unnati Hooda went down fighting to three-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the women’s singles quarterfinals.
Unnati lost 16-21, 21-14, 17-21 after forcing a decider against the Japanese star.
In shooting, Esha Singh was sixth after the precision round of the women’s 25m pistol qualification with 290-9x. Rahi Sarnobat and Manu Bhaker were placed 15th and 16th respectively, both with 287-6x.
India occupied third place in the team standings with 864-21x, with the rapid round scheduled for Monday.
Neeru led the women’s trap qualification with 48 hits after two rounds, while Manisha Keer and Aashima Ahlawat were placed 16th and 24th respectively with 42 and 40 hits.
India’s fencing campaign, however, ended after the women’s sabre team lost 35-45 to Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals.
Bhavani Devi, Shreya Gupta, Jefarlin Jani Rexlin Simla and S Shruti Joshi had earlier defeated Indonesia 45-23 in the Round of 16 to reach the last eight.
In equestrian, Hriday Chheda finished eighth in the individual dressage final with a score of 72.680, while Jai Sud was ninth with 71.490, bringing India’s campaign in the discipline to a close.
India also made progress in surfing, with Sivaraj Babu advancing to Round 3 of the men’s shortboard event. Sugar Shanti Gayen and Kamali Prakash similarly progressed to Round 3 in the women’s shortboard competition.
The focus now shifts to a crucial medal phase for India, with squash, athletics and weightlifting offering major opportunities.
Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh will fight for gold in the women’s and men’s singles squash finals respectively, while Harjinder Kaur will be in contention in the women’s 69kg weightlifting final.
With multiple archery teams already through to the medal rounds and major finals lined up across disciplines, India enters the second half of Day 8 with several avenues to add to its medal tally.
