Army’s Mech Tech Seminar 2.0 to focus on upgrading existing combat platforms for future warfare

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) The Indian Army’s Western Command will organise the Mechanisation Technology Seminar 2.0, themed ‘CHAKRA – Transforming Existing Platforms for Future Combat’, at Chandimandir Military Station on December 14-15, with a focus on enhancing the combat effectiveness of existing military platforms through indigenous technological innovations.
Lieutenant General Pushpendra Pal Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, today said emerging technologies were changing the nature of warfare, making it imperative for the armed forces to upgrade existing platforms alongside developing new capabilities.
“Drones, artificial intelligence, precision weapons and other emerging technologies are transforming the way that wars are fought in the current era. However, to stay ahead, we must not only develop new capabilities, but also find smarter ways to make our existing military platforms more effective, lethal, and more survivable,” he said.
The Army commander was speaking at the curtain-raiser for Mech Tech Seminar 2.0, inaugurated by him at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi. The event was organised by Western Command in collaboration with the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM).
Highlighting the seminar’s focus on practical battlefield requirements, Lt Gen Singh said the initiative would adopt a bottom-up approach by identifying challenges faced by soldiers and seeking technological solutions from Indian industry, startups and academia.
“Instead of simply looking at what technology is available, we have started by asking a more important question. What are the actual challenges our soldiers face on the ground and how can technology help overcome them?” he said.
Based on operational requirements, the Army has identified specific challenges and developed Problem Definition Statements (PDS), which are being shared with industry, startups and academic institutions to encourage innovative, affordable and practical solutions.
The seminar will focus on Combat Capability Enhancement, Harnessing Technology, Adaptability, Kinetics, Refurbishment and Atmanirbharta, with an emphasis on converting identified operational gaps into implementable technological solutions.
Emphasising the need to extend the operational life and effectiveness of existing military assets, Lt Gen Singh said, “We cannot replace our entire fleet every time that a new technology emerges. But we can certainly make the existing platforms smarter, stronger, and more capable.”
He said indigenous innovation could play a decisive role in equipping soldiers with improved capabilities, noting that the initiative was aimed at addressing actual battlefield requirements through niche technological solutions.
The December seminar will bring together representatives of the Indian Army, defence industry and academia to exchange ideas, showcase technologies and explore ways to modernise existing mechanised platforms in line with evolving operational demands. The initiative also seeks to strengthen civil-military collaboration and accelerate the development of indigenous defence technologies, contributing to the broader objective of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
“Mech Tech 2.0 is about meeting the real battlefield needs with niche technological solutions. It is also about enhancing our combat effectiveness, building a stronger defence innovation ecosystem, and giving greater momentum to Atmanirbhar Bharat,” Lt Gen Singh added.
