Arunachal Congress sets up panel to study concerns over projects

Itanagar, Sept 27 (UNI) The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has constituted a Study-cum-Fact-Finding Committee to examine concerns surrounding the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) and other mega hydropower projects in the Siang region.
The committee was formed by APCC president Bosiram Siram amid continuing concerns and protests by project-affected communities and reports of security forces deployment in the region.
APCC working president Tanga Byaling will head the committee, with former MP Takam Sanjoy as vice-chairman. Advocate Tami Pangu has been appointed member secretary, while Daniel Gao and Johny Yangfo are members.
According to the APCC, the committee will undertake interactions with affected families, village elders, community organisations and other stakeholders to assess the social, environmental and livelihood implications of the proposed projects.
It will also examine concerns related to land acquisition, rehabilitation and security deployment before submitting a report with its observations and recommendations within 15 days.
A sub-committee headed by Tami Pangu has been constituted to undertake village-to-village visits. Representatives from the APCC, East Siang and Upper Siang District Congress Committees, district tribal councils and other organisational units will assist in the field exercise.
The APCC has also appealed to political parties, civil society organisations, student bodies, community-based organisations, PRI representatives, Gaon Burahs and Gaon Buris, women and youth groups, and representatives of affected villages to join the field visits.
The party has invited stakeholders to nominate at least one representative within three days to accompany the committee and share their views, concerns and observations.
The APCC said the exercise was aimed at documenting ground-level information and preparing a representative report for submission to the state government and the people of Arunachal Pradesh. It appealed to all stakeholders to work towards a peaceful and democratic resolution of the issues surrounding the proposed projects.
