Asian Games: Aman crowns India’s strong wrestling campaign with 57kg gold; Antim takes silver

New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) Olympic medallist Aman Sehrawat finally changed the colour of his Asian Games medal, winning the men’s 57kg freestyle gold with an 11-7 victory over North Korea’s world champion Chong Song Han in a fiercely contested final in Nagoya on Saturday.
The 23-year-old, who won bronze at the Hangzhou Asian Games, produced a tactically assured performance against a difficult opponent to complete his rise to the top of the continental podium. Aman, India’s youngest Olympic medallist after his bronze at the Paris Games, stayed in control despite Han’s repeated attempts to unsettle him.
Aman had earlier defeated Tajikistan’s Aiaal Belolyubskii 14-8 in the semifinals to set up his title clash with Han.
Against Han, he combined attacking wrestling with a measured approach, refusing to allow the North Korean to dictate the pace. Even as Han looked for openings, Aman maintained his composure and protected his advantage to seal an 11-7 victory.
The gold added another major title to Aman’s growing list of achievements. He is a former U23 world champion and Asian champion, and his Olympic bronze made him one of India’s leading wrestlers in the 57kg category.
His victory also gave India their second men’s freestyle gold of the Games after Sujeet Kalkal had won the 65kg title earlier in the competition.
The triumph also marked a significant moment for Indian freestyle wrestling. It was the first time since 1978 that India had won two men’s freestyle gold medals at a single Asian Games.
Antim Panghal added a silver medal in the women’s 53kg category, going one better than the bronze she won at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
Antim settled for silver after going down to Japan’s Moe Kiyooka in the gold-medal bout. Kiyooka took an early lead in a closely fought contest and maintained her advantage despite Antim’s attempts to fight back.
Trailing 0-2, Antim opened her account in the second period but Kiyooka responded with a takedown before producing a late four-point move to close out the contest. The silver gave Antim her second successive Asian Games medal.
Deepak Punia won bronze in the men’s freestyle 97kg category after edging Mongolia’s Gankhuyag Ganbaatar 2-1 in a low-scoring medal bout. Deepak took a two-point lead in the opening period and then defended it effectively after Ganbaatar pulled one point back in the second. The Indian held his nerve to secure another Asian Games medal after his silver in the 86kg category at the 2023 Asian Games.
He began his campaign with a dominant 12-2 win over China’s Zhou Junpeng before advancing to the semifinals without wrestling his quarterfinal after Hong Kong’s Li Wui Fung Vincent failed to appear. Deepak then narrowly lost 9-8 to Uzbekistan’s Sherzod Poyonov in the semifinal but bounced back to finish on the podium.
Sagar Jaglan missed out on a medal in the men’s freestyle 74kg category after losing his bronze-medal bout to Kazakhstan’s three-time world medallist Nurkozha Kaipanov. Kaipanov struck almost immediately with a takedown and then pinned Sagar inside 30 seconds to end the Indian’s medal hopes.UNI TB AAB
