Asian Games boxing: Narender wins bronze as Ankush, Parveen reach finals

New Delhi, Sep 29 (UNI) Indian boxer Narender Berwal claimed his second successive Asian Games bronze medal after losing 5-0 to reigning world champion Aibek Oralbay of Kazakhstan in the men’s 90kg semifinal at the Nishio Gymnasium in Aichi on Tuesday.
Narender, who had also won bronze in the 92kg category at Hangzhou 2023, found it difficult to deal with Oralbay’s speed and power. The Kazakh controlled the bout for most of the contest, while Narender tried to close the distance and create openings. He was given a standing count in the final round before Oralbay completed a unanimous victory.

Narender had begun his campaign with a bye in the Round of 16 before stopping Thailand’s Adthapong Saengtep in the quarterfinals.

While Narender settled for bronze, Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal booked their places in the gold-medal bouts with wins earlier in the day.

Ankush produced the biggest result of the day for India, beating Uzbekistan’s reigning 75kg world champion Fazliddin Erkinboev 4-1 in the men’s 80kg semifinal. The victory made him the first Indian male boxer in eight years to reach an Asian Games final. Parveen was equally convincing, beating China’s Li Shu 5-0 in the women’s 65kg semifinal. She will face Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien-chin in the gold-medal bout.
Narender, Parveen and Ankush are part of the six Indian boxers who have secured medals at Aichi-Nagoya. The other three — Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain, Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya — will compete in their respective semifinals on Wednesday.

Lovlina will take on Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova in the women’s 75kg semifinal, while Priya faces China’s Yang Chengyu in the women’s 60kg last four. Kapil will meet Uzbekistan’s Turabek Khabibullaev in the men’s 90kg semifinal.

Under the Boxing Federation of India’s selection criteria, Asian Games medallists will be the main entries in their respective weight categories for the 2027 World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan, which will also be the first boxing qualifying event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
