Asian Games: Late bloomer Neeru Dhanda breaks new ground with trap gold

New Delhi, Sep 29 (UNI) Neeru Dhanda arrived at the Asian Games as a medal contender. She left as a history-maker. The 26-year-old Indian Army shooter produced a near-flawless performance in the women’s trap final on Tuesday, winning gold with a Games-record 28/30 and becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual shotgun medal at the continental showpiece.
It was also India’s first individual gold at Aichi-Nagoya, bringing an end to a wait that had begun to weigh on the country’s shooting contingent.
Dhanda had spent the previous three days at the top of the qualification standings, shooting a Games-record 118 to also help India secure silver in the team event. But the final was where the real pressure awaited. She was not only chasing a medal but attempting to achieve something no Indian woman had managed in shotgun at the Asian Games.
