Bangladesh's powerful students' body protests bail of Chinmoy Das, terms it example of 'Indian imperialism'

Dhaka, May 2 (UNI) Bangladesh’s powerful Students Against Discrimination (SAD) that led the movement to oust Sheikh Hasina's government last year, has protested against the bail given to Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, terming it an example of "Indian imperialism".
SAD leader Hasnat Abdullah, who in the past has made anti-India comments, issued a statement against the bail given to Chinmoy Das, with SAD members demanding justice for the murder of Advocate Saiful Islam Alif, who was killed during a clash over Das’ remand on November 26, 2024.
The students' party, masterminds of the July-Uprising last year, called for a protest demonstration after the Jummah prayers at 2 pm today (May 2) in front of Anderkilla Shahi Jame Mosque in Chattogram, according to Business Standard BD.
Hasnat Abdullah, wrote on Facebook "I do not consider Chinnmoy's bail to be an isolated incident. From the very beginning of the Chinmoy case, Indian imperialism has tried to exert unjust influence over this country.
"Was Chinnmoy's bail also granted as a submission to that pressure?"
He warned the government saying, "If you pave the way for Indian aggression by standing on Alif's blood, the consequences will not be good."
Chinmoy Das was arrested in Dhaka on November 25 last year and charged with sedition for allegedly disrespecting the national flag. Following his remand on November 26, a clash between law enforcers, lawyers, and Chinmoy Das' followers took place in the court premises, which led to the death of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.
On December 3, the court postponed Chinmoy's bail hearing to January 2, 2025, as no lawyer represented him during the earlier proceedings.
Later, on December 12, Supreme Court lawyer Rabindra Ghosh submitted an authorisation letter on behalf of local lawyer Sumit Acharya. The court then ordered the presence of the lawyer for verification of the document.
After a February 4 order by Bangladesh High Court, bail hearings of the Hindu monk started.
While he was granted bail by the HC on April 30, it was suspended on the same day by the Appellate Division Chamber Court of the Bangladesh Supreme Court until the next hearing.
Ever since Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus’ regime came to power in August last year, the country has witnessed an unchecked rise in Islamic extremism, increased persecution and harassment of Hindus and other minorities, deterioration of bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh, and the crumbling of the country’s socio-political fabric and economic stability.
