Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari to visit Darjeeling, Malda on October 7–8

Siliguri, Oct 6 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to visit two north Bengal districts separately on October 7 and 8, according to official sources.
Adhikari is scheduled to attend a political programme in Darjeeling town tomorrow, responding to an invitation from Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) chief Bimal Gurung.
Though the Darjeeling visit remained uncertain for most of the day, the programme was finalised after 3 pm. Officials subsequently conducted an initial survey of the security arrangements at the North Point School ground, where the GJM will organise its foundation day programme.
According to officials, the Chief Minister will arrive at Bagdogra airport by air and proceed by helicopter to the Army helipad at Lebong in Darjeeling. From Lebong, he will travel by road to North Point School.
Gurung had met Adhikari during the Chief Minister’s recent visit to three north Bengal districts, including Alipurduar, where he attended a World Rhino Day programme. Adhikari had then told reporters that he would try to attend the GJM chief’s programme if he did not have any national-level engagement.
After returning to Kolkata, Adhikari is scheduled to visit Manikchak in Malda on October 8 to take stock of the fresh flood situation in Bhutni island and the erosion affecting both banks of the Ganga and Fulhar rivers across five blocks.
Malda District Magistrate Rajanvir Singh Kapoor held a meeting with concerned officials on Tuesday to review preparations for the Chief Minister’s visit, particularly in Manikchak along the Ganga. Adhikari is expected to reach the area by helicopter.
During the visit, the Chief Minister is expected to interact with flood- and erosion-affected residents, distribute relief materials and address a public gathering.
The Darjeeling visit comes at a significant political juncture for the GJM. Following the change of guard in the state, Gurung has been seeking to revive his party by renewing the demand for a permanent political solution (PPS), extending beyond the jurisdiction of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration to include hundreds of mouzas in the Terai and Dooars.
