Bengal: Dying water body revamped into recreation spot in Behala

Kolkata, Oct 6 (UNI) A dying water body has been transformed into an amusement and recreation spot after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) revamped a pond that was almost filled with waste and turned it into a water body with fresh water, fountains and decorative lighting for locals.
According to official sources in the KMC, the water body was on the verge of becoming land, with huge piles of waste and garbage being dumped into it.
"A considerable portion of the water body had been filled up with garbage being dumped over the years," said an official.
"The KMC was trying to restore it for the long term and finally it was opened for the public today. The water body has floating fountains with beautiful lighting on them. There are recreational courts for sports like volleyball, basketball and badminton. A pathway around the water body has also been developed to enable walkers to enjoy jogging," the official said.
The recreational spot has been developed at the junction of B L Saha Road and Roy Bahadur Road in Ward No. 117 in Behala.
"The water body, with three sports courts and walkways, has been equipped with solar panels. All the light masts, the fountain and its lighting are to be run on solar power. The fountains have been included to prevent the recurrence of filling the water body," the official pointed out.
Apart from restoring the water body, the civic body has also set up two compactor stations in Ward No. 121. The two stations are equipped with two compactor machines each.
As informed by the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department Minister, one compactor has been introduced at a cost of around Rs 81 lakh, while the other costs around Rs 70 to 71 lakh.
