Bengal: Family questions police encounter that killed BJP leader Sujit Mondal's murder accused

Kolkata, Oct 28 (UNI) The family of Samaul Sheikh, an accused in the murder of BJP worker Sujit Mondal, questioned on Wednesday the police account of his death in an alleged encounter in Murshidabad on Tuesday, claiming that he was innocent and had been killed after a fabricated story was prepared to justify the shooting.
His wife, Rajeda Bibi, said Samaul had met her and their young daughter in jail on Monday and had expressed hope that he would soon be released on bail. Within hours of that meeting, he was killed in a police encounter, leaving his family devastated.
"He had placed his hand on our daughter's head and said he was innocent and might get bail. He broke down while saying this," Rajeda recalled, struggling to contain her grief.
Samaul had been lodged at Berhampore Central Correctional Home since his arrest in connection with the murder of Sujit Mondal, a BJP worker from Dhulian whose body was allegedly dismembered and disposed of in August. The investigation was subsequently handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Police arrested Samaul's alleged girlfriend, Tajkira Bibi, and her younger son-in-law, Joni Sheikh, in connection with the case.
According to police, Sujit was murdered at a rented house belonging to Samaul in the Dakbangla area of Samserganj, around 50-100 metres from Bhutu Market. Investigators took Samaul to the house on Tuesday to reconstruct the crime.
Police claimed that during the exercise, Samaul snatched a revolver from an officer and opened fire, but missed his targets. He allegedly pointed the weapon at a deputy superintendent of police, prompting an inspector to fire in self-defence. The bullet struck Samaul in the head, killing him.
Rajeda, however, rejected the allegations against her husband. She said she had believed Tajkira was like an elder sister and was unaware of the alleged relationship or any involvement in the crime.
After receiving news of the shooting on Tuesday, Rajeda rushed to a local hospital where she was told her husband had been taken. Unable to trace him there, she went to the police station but received no information. On Wednesday morning, police informed her that his body was at the police morgue of Jangipur Sub-divisional Hospital. The body was subsequently being taken to Berhampore Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination, police said.
Investigators alleged that Samaul had reached the rented house hours before Sujit's murder on 27th August and later made two attempts to dispose of the body. Police also claimed Tajkira had demanded ransom from Sujit's family by presenting the murder as a kidnapping.
Samaul's relatives and neighbours questioned how he could have seized a firearm despite the presence of senior officers. Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area following the encounter, the second such incident in Bengal within 24 hours after the shooting of a rape-and-murder accused in Gaighata, North 24-Parganas.
