Bengal: Former DCP Shantanu Sinha Biswas booked under Prevention of Corruption Act

Kolkata, Sep 16 (UNI) A fresh complaint has been lodged against former DCP Shantanu Sinha Biswas at Gariahat Police Station under the Prevention of Corruption Act, alleging that he abused his official position to obtain financial benefits worth around Rs 2.89 crore.
According to the complaint, Biswas allegedly received the benefits directly and indirectly through cash payments, gifts and other financial arrangements.
The allegations include payments made to his family members and properties allegedly acquired through benami transactions.
The complaint claims that his wife received Rs 74.36 lakh as salary from an organisation.
Biswas has also been accused of acquiring two flats worth Rs 82 lakh in benami names.
He allegedly used his influence to arrange Rs 20.27 lakh towards his son's college fees.
The complaint further alleges that he received Rs 61 lakh in the name of carrying out repairs to a house in Kandi, Murshidabad.
Investigators have also alleged that Biswas collected between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh from different companies in exchange for extending official favours.
The complaint further names Behala-based businessman Joy Kamdar, alleging that Biswas received Rs 13 lakh from him in cash and gifts.
He is also accused of taking another Rs 2 lakh from Kamdar to be given to his wife.
Biswas is currently lodged at Midnapore Central Correctional Home.
He had earlier been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a land-grabbing case.
The agency filed a charge sheet against him in July, alleging misappropriation of around Rs 3 crore.
His name had surfaced during the ED's investigation into a land-grabbing case involving Sona Pappu alias Biswajit Poddar.
Kamdar was also named in the same investigation. All three are currently in jail.
According to the ED, the trio allegedly worked together to grab land in different parts of Kolkata.
The agency has alleged that police influence was used to harass landowners, including by initiating complaints against them.
The ED has estimated that around Rs 50 crore was allegedly misappropriated through land-grabbing activities in various parts of Kolkata.
The latest complaint under the Prevention of Corruption Act has added another set of allegations against the former police officer, with the authorities now set to examine the alleged flow of money and the role of other individuals and entities named in the complaint.
