Bengaluru to host Asian Masters Swimming C'ship

Bengaluru, Oct 3 (UNI) Bengaluru will host the second Asian Masters Swimming Championships from October 4 to 10, with more than 1,500 participants from nine Asian countries expected to take part in the continental competition.
The seven-day championship will be held at the Padukone Dravid Centre for Excellence and will see participation from India, Sri Lanka, Iran, Thailand, Japan, China, Oman, Malaysia and South Korea.
The event is being hosted by the Swimming Federation of India (SFI) under the aegis of Asia Aquatics, with the Karnataka Swimming Association (KSA) as the local organising partner.
The championship returns a decade after its inaugural edition was held in Japan in 2016.
India will field a contingent of more than 1,000 swimmers, selected through the recently concluded National Championships in Haryana and respective State Masters Championships.
The sizeable Indian participation is being seen as a reflection of the growing popularity of Masters swimming and increasing interest among adults in swimming, fitness and active lifestyles.
Among the prominent Indian swimmers expected to compete are Partha Varnashi, Arvind Nainar, Rohit Hawaldar and Dr Bhawna Anand, while China’s Gang Le is also among the notable participants.
SFI Secretary General Monal Choksi said hosting the continental championship was a matter of pride for the federation and that participation of more than 1,500 people, including over 1,000 Indians, underlined the growing popularity of Masters swimming across Asia.
“We are delighted to welcome athletes from nine nations to Bengaluru and look forward to delivering a memorable championship that celebrates sporting excellence, fitness and the spirit of swimming,” he said.
Organising Committee Chairman Gopal Hosur said Bengaluru was proud to host an event of such scale and that the organisers were working with SFI, Asia Aquatics and KSA to ensure a smooth championship.
“Beyond competition, the championship is an opportunity to promote swimming as a lifelong sport and inspire people of all ages to embrace fitness and an active lifestyle,” he said.
SFI Vice President Satish Kumar said the Indian Masters contingent had been growing as more swimmers were embracing swimming as a lifelong sport.
“The participation of over 1,000 Indian swimmers this year is a testament to this growing movement,” he said, adding that the championship would encourage more people to take up swimming both competitively and as a means of staying fit.
The championship will feature swimmers across Masters age categories, providing an international competitive platform while promoting participation, perseverance and lifelong fitness.
With Bengaluru hosting the second edition, the SFI aims to strengthen the Masters swimming movement in India and expand participation in aquatic sports across age groups.
