Bihar: DBT-BIRAC, AIIMS Patna join hands to boost healthcare innovation

Patna, Oct 24 (UNI) The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), in collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna, today organised a workshop on regulatory requirements for healthcare innovation with a focus on helping researchers and startups develop safe, effective and market-ready products.
The one-day workshop, titled “Regulatory Readiness for Global Healthcare Innovation”, was held at the AIIMS Patna auditorium through the institute’s innovation wing, the AIIMS Patna Incubation and Innovation Council (APIIC).
The event brought together senior government officials, regulatory experts, academic leaders, researchers and industry representatives to discuss the challenges involved in translating healthcare research into practical applications and taking innovative products to market.
A key highlight was the announcement of a proposed Regulatory Facilitation Cluster (RFC) for Bihar, which aims to strengthen access to regulatory guidance and technical expertise for healthcare innovators.
The proposed cluster will bring together AIIMS Patna through APIIC, the ICMR-Rajendra Memorial Research Institute of Medical Sciences (ICMR-RMRIMS), Patna, the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Hajipur, and the Innovation Centre at IIT Patna.
The initiative is expected to help innovators navigate product testing, clinical evaluation and regulatory approval processes, thereby facilitating the development and commercialisation of healthcare technologies.
The technical sessions covered Indian and international regulatory frameworks, medical device testing, clinical evaluation, evidence generation, artificial intelligence-based healthcare technologies, software as a medical device, patient data protection and post-market surveillance.
Experts also discussed regulatory requirements in Europe and the United States, underlining the importance of compliance with international standards for healthcare products seeking access to global markets.
The programme also featured a Regulatory Shivir under the 94th FIRST Hub, providing innovators an opportunity to interact directly with regulatory experts and seek guidance on product-specific requirements, risk assessment and clinical investigation procedures.
The workshop underscored the importance of collaboration among healthcare institutions, research organisations, regulators and industry in translating scientific advances into practical healthcare solutions.
Through the initiative, DBT-BIRAC and AIIMS Patna reiterated their commitment to strengthening Bihar’s healthcare innovation ecosystem and supporting the development of safe, effective and accessible healthcare technologies.
