Bihar's Shams Alam to represent India at Asian Para Games for third time

Patna, Oct 4 (UNI) Bihar para-swimmer Shams Alam has been selected in the Indian contingent for the Asian Para Games-2026, scheduled to be held in Japan from October 18 to 24.
Alam will represent India at the prestigious continental event for the third consecutive time. He is the first para-swimmer from Bihar to be selected for the Asian Para Games three times in succession.
Expressing happiness over his selection, Alam described it as a proud moment and thanked the Bihar government for its support and encouragement to sportspersons.
He said the assistance extended by the state government had played an important role in advancing his sporting career.
Alam has a notable record at national and international competitions. He won four gold medals at the Indian Open Para Swimming Championship in 2018. Earlier, he had won a bronze medal at the Can-Am Para Swimming Championships held in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, in 2016.
He represented India at the Asian Para Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 2018 and at the World Para Swimming Championships held in Madeira, Portugal, in 2022.
In recognition of his contribution to sports, Alam was conferred the Best Sportsperson Award in the Divyang category by the President of India on December 3, 2021.
His selection for the Indian contingent for the Asian Para Games-2026 is being regarded as a significant achievement for Bihar's sporting community and is expected to inspire emerging para-athletes in the state.
