BJP MLA vows to quit if decades old Sai Layout flooding persists

Bengaluru, May 21 (UNI) Amid mounting public anger over persistent waterlogging in Sai Layout, BJP MLA and former minister Byrathi Basavaraj on Wednesday said he would resign from the Karnataka Legislative Assembly if he failed to prevent flooding in the area by the coming monsoon.
The residents of Sai Layout, located in the KR Puram constituency, have been reeling under flooding for over a decade, with the latest bout of rains leaving the locality waterlogged for nearly four days. Roads were submerged and water entered homes, cutting off access and causing severe inconvenience.
An inspection of the affected area earlier this week by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath was conducted on a tractor due to the inundated roads.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and MLA Basavaraj visited Sai Layout during the day to assess the situation. However, angry residents accused the officials of apathy and criticised the Chief Minister’s visit as a "partial inspection," alleging he did not listen to their grievances in full.
"What can I do when the Chief Minister himself did not inspect the whole of Sai Layout? Can I drag him?" Basavaraj said in response to the criticism, speaking to reporters after the visit.
Stating that he has regularly addressed issues raised by the residents, Basavaraj said he had ensured supply of essentials like water, meals, and milk during the recent flooding. “I have again brought the problem to the notice of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister,” he added.
Siddaramaiah is learnt to have assured residents of steps to address the flooding issue. Basavaraj reiterated his commitment to resolving the problem before the monsoon and said he would step down as MLA if he failed to do so. UNI BDN SSP
