BMC corporator suspended for livestreaming House proceedings

Bhubaneswar, Oct 27 (UNI) Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das on Tuesday suspended Ward 37 corporator Bandita Pal from the 45th general meeting of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) for livestreaming the proceedings on her mobile phone despite repeated objections from the chair and fellow members.
The Mayor invoked Section 114(5) of the Municipal Act, citing misconduct and disrespect to the House. The suspension came amid a stormy session marked by protests over civic amenities and alleged violations of protocol.
Earlier, corporators objected to the inauguration of a road in Ward 10 without inviting the Mayor and the local corporator, demanding that the civic body formally inaugurate it again. The Mayor assured them that their demand would be met, prompting them to return to their seats.
The House later witnessed heated exchanges over street lighting and sanitation. Corporators questioned the delay in engaging a new sanitation agency despite completion of the tender process. BMC Commissioner Chanchal Rana said the agency had been selected and the proposal sent to the state government for approval.
The Mayor and Commissioner assured the corporators that efforts would be made to resolve the issue within 10 days, following which the meeting resumed.
The House subsequently discussed pending decisions, questions raised by corporators and proposals from standing committees and various departments, passing several resolutions.
With the corporators' tenure nearing its end, the Mayor urged them to expedite pending development works.
