CCMB study reveals complex maternal genetic ancestry of Konkani-speaking communities

Hyderabad, Oct 23 (UNI) A new study by researchers from CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, and Mangalore University has revealed the complex maternal genetic ancestry of Konkani-speaking communities along India’s western coast.
The findings, published in the journal Heredity, highlight a combination of deep-rooted South Asian and West Eurasian ancestral lineages.
Led by Dr K Thangaraj of CCMB and Prof M S Mustak of Mangalore University, the study analysed mitochondrial DNA from 295 Konkani individuals and compared the findings with data from more than 5,000 individuals across Eurasia. Researchers found that maternal ancestry was predominantly local, while Saraswata groups showed relatively stronger affinities with West Eurasian and Steppe-associated lineages.
The findings suggest that ancient migrations into South Asia involved both maternal and paternal contributions. The study also identified the effects of historical founder events and long-term endogamy among communities such as the Kharvi and Kudubi, while Gauda Saraswata Brahmins and Roman Catholics showed greater genetic diversity than some other Konkani groups.
The researchers said the findings offer valuable insights into the region’s population history and ethnolinguistic diversity. Other contributors include Dr Jaison Sequeira, Prof. George van Driem of the University of Bern and Dr Lomous Kumar of BSIP, Lucknow.
CCMB Director Dr Vinay Kumar Nandicoori said the study adds an important dimension to understanding the history of communities along India’s western coast.
