Chapman, Ravindra ruled out of India ODIs as NZ suffer double blow

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) New Zealand will be without Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra for the five-match ODI series against India as both players continue their recovery from injuries, dealing a significant blow to the visitors ahead of the opening match in Auckland on November 4.

The two players also missed the T20I series, which New Zealand lost 3-2, and have not recovered in time for the 50-over leg of the tour.

Chapman picked up a left hamstring injury while playing in the European T20 Premier League. A recent MRI scan showed that the batter needs another two weeks of rehabilitation before he can return to full fitness.
Ravindra, meanwhile, dislocated his right shoulder during a promotional shoot. New Zealand Cricket said the all-rounder needs more time to recover before he can field at full capacity.

“Everyone knows what an asset Mark and Rachin are to this side so it’s a shame they have to miss this series,” head coach Rob Walter said.

“I caught up with Mark last week and although he’s disappointed he’s working hard to get back on the field. With Rachin, his shoulder hasn’t quite recovered to a position where he could field comfortably in white-ball cricket, so with the Test series later this month we don’t want to take any undue risks.”

New Zealand have made several changes to their squad to cover the absentees. Wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert, who was initially picked for the final two ODIs, has now been included for the first three matches as well. Left-handed batter Henry Nicholls has also been added for the opening three games, while all-rounder Dean Foxcroft will join the squad for the last two.

Pacer Matt Fisher, initially named only for the final two matches, will also be available for the first three ODIs.

There is still some uncertainty over Matt Henry's availability. The fast bowler missed the last three T20Is after suffering a low-grade tear in his right quadricep.
He is expected to join the squad on Monday (November 2), after which the team management will assess his fitness and decide whether he is ready to play.

New Zealand squad for first 3 ODIs: Mitchell Santner (captain), Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham (wicketkeeper), Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Glenn Phillips, Tim Seifert, Nathan Smith, Will Young, Blair Tickner

New Zealand squad for 4th & 5th ODIs: Mitchell Santner (captain), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Kristian Clarke, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Dean Foxcroft, Lockie Ferguson, Mitchell Hay (wicketkeeper), Nick Kelly, Tim Seifert (wicketkeeper), Blair Tickner, Will Young.
