CIAL becomes first airport in India to extend DigiYatra to international passengers

Kochi, Oct 27 (UNI): Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has become the first airport in India to facilitate international passenger processing through DigiYatra, with the first passenger using the facility to travel to the Maldives on an IndiGo flight on Tuesday.
The facility, being tested for select airlines, combines electronic passports (e-passports) with biometric facial recognition to verify passengers at designated checkpoints, reducing the need for physical documents during the airport processing procedure.
CIAL had introduced DigiYatra for domestic passengers on August 15, 2023. Since then, the system has gained acceptance among travellers, with one in every three domestic passengers using the facility for their journeys through the airport.
The system operates on an in-house e-boarding software developed by CIAL's Technology and Innovation team, reflecting the airport operator's focus on developing technology solutions for aviation.
Building on this expertise, CIAL is now seeking to extend its technological capabilities to other airports through consultancy services, enabling them to adopt similar systems for passenger verification and processing.
The company recently launched Aviation Consultancy and Expert Services (ACES), inaugurated by Kerala Chief Minister and CIAL Chairman V D Satheesan. Durgapur Airport has become the first client under the initiative, with CIAL set to provide its in-house-developed Passenger Verification System.
CIAL Managing Director S Suhas said the extension of DigiYatra to international departures demonstrated the company's commitment to innovative, technology-driven solutions for air travel.
Through ACES, CIAL aims to make its in-house technological expertise available to other airports and support the wider adoption of advanced passenger-processing systems across the aviation sector, he added.
