CJP volunteers breach barricades at Jantar Mantar, day after protest site denotification, detained

New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) Volunteers of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) today entered the barricaded Jantar Mantar protest site in central Delhi by climbing its locked gates, a day after the Centre withdrew its designated status, triggering fresh confrontation with the Delhi Police.
CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das and national organisation in-charge Ajinkya Shinde were among those detained after the early morning demonstration, party founder Abhijeet Dipke said. A senior police officer said the group, which included at least 10 other people, had been taken into custody after some protesters entered the venue carrying the national flag.
Videos shared by the party leaders on social media showed protesters scaling the locked gates and a police barricade before entering the premises. Raising slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Inquilab Zindabad”, the demonstrators were intercepted by police personnel deployed at the site.
The protesters also raised slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
In a post on X, Dipke described the action as an attempt to reclaim the venue and challenged the government's decision to withdraw its designated protest status. “You cannot denotify the resistance,” he said.
Das later posted on X that the detained protesters had been taken to Jaffarpur police station. In a video recorded after his detention, he declared, “We have breached Jantar Mantar.”
Ranka, meanwhile, asserted that the demand for Kumar's resignation would continue to be pursued at the venue. “No matter what,” he said in the video.
In another post, Das said the group had returned to the venue within a day of its denotification. “In less than 24 hours of Jantar Mantar being denotified as a designated protest site, we reclaimed it,” he wrote, adding, “This is a message to the government, hands off people's Jantar Mantar! Gyanu's time is over.”
Dipke also warned that the move would not end demonstrations, claiming that new centres of protest would emerge across the country.
“PM's fear is evident from the fact that he has removed Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site. He thinks protests will stop if Jantar Mantar is no longer a designated protest site, but that is not going to happen. Jantar Mantars will now emerge across the country,” he asserted.
In a separate post, he wrote that the entire country would become Jantar Mantar, arguing that the venue had already been turned into a heavily policed zone.
The confrontation comes amid a series of demonstrations by the opposition INDIA bloc and CJP in the national capital over the SIR issue and their demand for action against the Chief Election Commissioner.
Jantar Mantar, located in the high-security Lutyens' Delhi area, had been a designated venue for public demonstrations. Delhi Police, however, fortified the site from October 10 and prevented protesters from entering it.
The CJP had called for a demonstration at the venue on October 10. Dipke, Das and Ranka were detained after arriving in Delhi that morning, with the party alleging that its leaders were taken into custody from inside their flight. The capital subsequently witnessed further protests and police action over the weekend, with thousands of demonstrators reportedly detained.
The denotification order was issued on Monday following a review of alternative venues for public demonstrations. According to a Delhi Police circular, a committee constituted by the union Home Ministry examined alternative locations to facilitate citizens' right to organise protests and sit-ins.
Based on the committee's recommendations, three venues have been designated for demonstrations: Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in east Delhi's Shahdara area. UNI PWS SS
