Concern in Kolhapur-Sangli districts over Karnataka raising water storage height at Almatti

Kolhapur, June 16 (UNI) People in Kolhapur and Sangli districts of Maharashtra, living along the banks of the Krushna, Panchaganga and Warna rivers, have expressed concern over Karnataka raising the water storage height in Almatti dam from 47 percent to 52 percent, fearing it could worsen the flood situation during the monsoon.
They said that the Central Water Commission (CWC) permitted the Karnataka government to fill 47 percent water storage in Almatti for June month. However, the Karnataka irrigation department has violated the CWC rules and raised the storage upto 52 percent this month.
According to Chandrshekhar Patole, superintendent of state irrigation department, the water storage capacity of Almatti irrigation dam is 123 TMC (519.6 meters). CWC has set rules regarding how much water should be stored in this dam in which month.
In end of June it was necessary to store 57 TMC (513.60 meters), which means 47 percent. But till today there was 64.03 TMC, with 52 percent storage by Karnataka, which is in violation of CWC rules, he said.
On the possibility of monsoon activity in Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara district in the next few days, there was panic situation in these three districts following 52 percent water filled in Almatti dam before the start of monsoon. At present with 23,230 cusec water coming into the dam, only 10,000 cusec water is being discharged.
However, Patole said their department is in contact with the Karnataka counterpart and "we already informed about today's water storage in the dam and expressed confidence that Karnataka state's officers will raise the water discharging".
While the Krushna Flood Control Committee coordinator Sarjerao Patil said the Maharashtra government should file a complain with the CWC and Karnataka government and send a notice to Karnataka government about violation of the rules.
