Congress announces its candidate for Kaliganj by-poll

Kolkata, May 30 (UNI) The Congress on Friday announced its candidate for the upcoming by-election to West Bengal's Kaliganj Assembly constituency in Nadia district, putting an end to speculation about its support for the Left Front in the polls.

The Congress in a media release said Kabil Uddin Ahmed would be its nominee for the seat.

Interestingly, only two days back, CPI(M) West Bengal secretary Mohammed Salim had announced the party’s intention to field a candidate for the by-election, scheduled next month, and expressed hopes of securing support from the Congres. He cited the party’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as a motivating factor behind the decision.

“We have fought in the Panchayat and the Lok Sabha elections there and did well. In the 2016 Assembly election, the Congress won the seat, but their MLA joined TMC. So, we think if we can file a candidate there and fight unitedly, we can defeat the BJP as well as the TMC there,” Salim had said.

Although the Congress acknowledged the need for an alliance to counter the TMC and BJP, it remained non-committal about supporting the CPI(M), with party sources noting that Kaliganj has traditionally been a Congress seat.

However, the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), a Left Front ally, has expressed its support for the CPI(M), stating it will back the party's candidate in the Kaliganj bypoll if CPI(M) chooses to contest the seat.

Congress had secured the seat in 2016 as part of an alliance with the Left Front. Earlier, the Left ally RSP had won it four times during the Left regime.
TMC's Nasiruddin Ahmed had won the seat in 2011, lost in 2016, and reclaimed it in 2021. Following his demise, the seat became vacant. The TMC has now nominated his daughter, Alifa Ahmed, a 38-year-old B.Tech graduate working in a reputed IT firm, as its candidate for the Kaliganj bypoll.

“Kaliganj is a traditional seat of Congress and so it is expected that we will contest from the seat. Now CPI(M) will have to decide its course of action,” a senior Congress leader said. UNI XC SSP
