Congress demands ouster of Mizoram district council chief over Myanmar birth claim

Aizawl, June 9 (UNI) The Congress party in southern Mizoram’s Mara region has demanded the resignation of M. Laikaw, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the BJP-led Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC), alleging that he was born in neighbouring Myanmar and is therefore ineligible to hold his current post.
The Mara District Congress Committee (MDCC) on Monday said Laikaw’s birthplace—Thiahratlah village in Myanmar—disqualifies him under council rules, which state that a candidate must be born within the area of the erstwhile Pawi-Lakher Regional Council, now part of Mizoram.
Citing church records from the Evangelical Church of Maraland, the Congress said Laikaw was inducted as an infant in a ceremony at Thiahratlah. However, the birth certificate he submitted while filing nomination papers for the council election lists his birthplace as Siaha Vaihpi in Mizoram. His biodata reportedly names Pala (Lawngban) village as his birthplace.
“These discrepancies are deeply concerning. Someone who was not born in Mizoram should not be allowed to hold an elected position in the district council,” the party said, demanding Laikaw’s resignation as both CEM and council member.
The controversy has stirred fresh political tension in the border region, which shares close ethnic and geographic ties with communities across the Myanmar border.
