De-addictions centres geo-tagged for easy public access: Govt

New Delhi, June 25 (UNI) All de-addiction facilities across the country have been geo-tagged to ensure they are easily accessible to those seeking information or treatment to combat substance use disorders, the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment (DoSJE) said today.

In a statement here, it further said more than 20,000 volunteers have been engaged in sensitising the public about the dangers of substance abuse. So far, nearly 16 crore people have been reached through this awareness campaign, said the statement which comes on the eve of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

To mark the occasion, a mega event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, bringing together representatives from all states, union territories (UTs), and NGOs supported by DoSJE under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR). The event will be graced by the Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, BL Verma, along with senior department officials.

As part of its flagship Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA), the Ministry has signed agreements with several spiritual and social service organisations, including The Art of Living, Brahma Kumaris, Sant Nirankari Mission, Ram Chandra Mission (Daaji), ISKCON, and All World Gayatri Parivaar. These organizations will aid in spreading awareness and providing support in the battle against drug dependence, said the statement.

The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was launched in response to growing concerns over the widespread social and health impacts of substance use disorders. These disorders not only affect individual health but also disrupt families and communities at large. The consumption of psychoactive substances can lead to various health complications, including neuro-psychiatric disorders, cardiovascular diseases, accidents, suicides, and violence, as per the statement.
