Delhi Police bust ‘digital arrest’ syndicate with foreign links: 11 arrested, Rs 7.25 crore saved

New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) Delhi Police’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) Unit has busted an alleged cyber fraud syndicate with links to handlers in Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries, arrested 11 people and helped secure Rs 7.25 crore in a digital arrest case involving a 79-year-old man, officials said on Tuesday.
Police have also placed a hold on Rs 1.96 crore in HDFC Bank and State Bank of India accounts linked to ongoing digital arrest and investment fraud investigations.
The network has allegedly been linked to 78 complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) across several states, involving approximately Rs 73 crore. Investigators have also identified seven Telegram channels allegedly used to trade mule bank accounts.
The crackdown followed a complaint by Pradeep Kumar Das, 69, a retired Scientist ‘F’ and former director in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, who alleged that he was cheated of Rs 1.25 crore.
On August 14, the complainant allegedly received calls from people impersonating Delhi Police, Anti-Terrorism Squad and National Investigation Agency officials. Claiming that his Aadhaar details had been misused in a money-laundering case, they threatened him with arrest and induced him to transfer Rs 1,25,09,000 through RTGS to three bank accounts. He was allegedly kept under continuous video surveillance.
During the investigation, police traced a suspicious current account held by M/s MR Traders with HDFC Bank to a premises in Dwarka, where five accused were arrested. They were identified as Md. Mahfuzar Rahman, Izhar Alam, Altaf Hussain, Intekhab and Anish Khan.
Examination of seized mobile phones allegedly revealed an application called “SMS TOOLS”, configured to forward SMS messages, including one-time passwords (OTPs), to other individuals. Telegram conversations reportedly indicated the sharing of bank credentials and coordination with suspected foreign handlers.
Anish Khan, 31, allegedly acted as the main handler in this part of the operation, managing the bank account and communicating with foreign-based associates. Police said he received a commission of 5.5 per cent in USDT cryptocurrency, which was subsequently converted into Indian currency. He had previously been arrested in another cybercrime case in Delhi.
The IFSO Unit also coordinated with Andhra Pradesh Police in a digital arrest case in Vijayawada, where a 79-year-old man, Boppana Baparao, was allegedly defrauded of Rs 10.25 crore. The intervention helped secure Rs 7.25 crore, officials said.
In a separate investment fraud case in West Bengal, Rs 21 lakh allegedly cheated from a complainant was credited to the M/s MR Traders account. Around Rs 5 lakh was transferred elsewhere before the account could be frozen.
Police seized six mobile phones and a cheque book linked to the suspected network. Further investigation is underway to trace the money trail, identify additional suspects and establish the extent of the syndicate’s foreign links.
