Dismissed Punjab AIG Raj Jit Singh arrested after three years on the run in drug nexus cases

Chandigarh, Sept 24 (UNI) Punjab Police on Thursday arrested dismissed Assistant Inspector General Raj Jit Singh Hundal in Patiala after he remained on the run for more than three years in cases linked to an alleged police-drug trafficking nexus, extortion and disproportionate assets.
Singh, who has recently told the Supreme Court through his counsel that he is willing to surrender as he was apprehended by a team of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) from a house in Darshan Singh Nagar in Patiala, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said.
"Hundal was apprehended from House Number 225/2, Darshan Singh Nagar, Patiala, under Police Station Anaj Mandi," Yadav said.
"Singh was arrested following continuous, highly technical and financial investigation by the ANTF team," the DGP said, adding that police would seek his remand from the competent court in connection with the cases against him.
Singh had been absconding since April 2023 and was dismissed from the Punjab Police on April 17 that year following proceedings arising from Special Investigation Team reports concerning an alleged nexus between police officials and drug traffickers.
He is a proclaimed offender in a case registered at the ANTF police station under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act.
He also faces a separate ANTF case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the NDPS Act and another case registered by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau relating to alleged disproportionate assets.
The cases stem partly from allegations concerning Singh's association with dismissed Punjab Police inspector Inderjit Singh and the handling of drug-related cases during their postings in the state.
Inderjit Singh was dismissed from service after being accused of involvement in drug trafficking, misappropriation of seized narcotics and planting drugs on people to extort money. Raj Jit Singh has been accused of protecting and acting in conspiracy with him. The allegations against Raj Jit Singh have not been finally adjudicated.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had earlier examined reports submitted by Special Investigation Teams constituted to probe the alleged police-drug nexus. In March 2023, the court opened three sealed reports and directed the state government to act on their findings.
The Punjab government subsequently dismissed Raj Jit Singh from service and criminal proceedings were initiated against him.
His arrest came after a development before the Supreme Court earlier this month.
During a hearing on Sept. 10, senior counsel appearing for Singh told a bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Augustine George Masih that he was willing to surrender.
The Supreme Court directed him to surrender in the meantime and adjourned the matter. The case is scheduled to be taken up again on Oct. 1.
Singh had approached the Supreme Court challenging an earlier order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and seeking transfer of the investigation against him from Punjab Police to another agency, contending that he would not receive a fair investigation from the state police.
Punjab Police said investigators would now seek his custodial remand for further questioning in the cases registered against him.
