DRDO conducts maiden live jump of indigenous high-altitude parachute in Ladakh

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted the maiden live jump of its indigenously developed Advanced High-Altitude Parachute (AHAP) at Nyoma in Ladakh, demonstrating the system’s capability and tactical employability in extremely high-altitude terrain.
The live jump was carried out from an altitude of 16,000 feet above mean sea level (AMSL) at the Nyoma (Mudh) drop Zone. The AHAP was deployed at 15,500 feet AMSL, with the landing taking place at the drop zone located at 13,700 feet.
The successful trial demonstrated the efficacy of the parachute system under challenging high-altitude conditions and marked a significant step towards enhancing indigenous capabilities for airborne operations in mountainous terrain.
The AHAP has been designed and developed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra, a DRDO laboratory specialising in aerial delivery systems. It is a static-line parachute system designed for the mass dropping of paratroopers.
The system has been manufactured by the Ordnance Parachute Factory (OPF), Kanpur, inspected by the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA) and certified by the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC), RCMA Kanpur.
According to DRDO, the AHAP provides multiple deployment modes and has an operational altitude range of up to 18,000 feet. Its rate of descent has been designed to meet the tactical requirements of the Indian armed forces operating in high-altitude areas.
Static-line parachute operations at extreme altitudes present significant challenges, including the effects of reduced atmospheric density, high opening shock and the need to maintain a safe rate of descent. The successful live jump at Nyoma therefore provides an important operational validation of the system in such conditions.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the armed forces, Defence Public Sector Undertakings and industry partners involved in the development and trial of the indigenous parachute system, describing the achievement as another significant step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Defence Secretary and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO Rajesh Kumar Singh also congratulated the teams associated with the design and development of the AHAP system.
The Advanced High-Altitude Parachute (AHAP) is intended to provide the armed forces with an indigenous static-line parachute capability for the deployment of paratroopers in demanding high-altitude environments.
The system's 18,000-foot operational altitude capability is particularly relevant for airborne operations in mountainous regions, where conventional parachute operations can become more challenging because of atmospheric conditions and terrain.
The AHAP development also reflects the broader push by the Ministry of Defence and DRDO towards reducing dependence on imported specialised military equipment. Its development involved an indigenous chain covering design and development by ADRDE, manufacture by OPF Kanpur, quality inspection by DGAQA and certification by CEMILAC.
The Nyoma trial is significant because it moved the system beyond developmental and certification stages into a live, operationally representative jump at very high altitude, providing a practical demonstration of its suitability for tactical employment by the armed forces.
