El Niño may trigger severe water crisis, Congress leader warns

Hyderabad, Oct 26 (UNI) Livestock Agency Chairman Charan Kaushik Yadav on Monday warned of a possible severe water crisis in Telangana due to the El Niño effect and urged people to conserve water and farmers to consider alternative crops to minimise potential losses.
Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan, he said there was no shortage of food at present, but below-normal rainfall was raising concerns over water availability.
He claimed that Greater Hyderabad consumed around 2,600 million litres of water daily, of which nearly half was wasted. He compared this with Bengaluru’s daily consumption of 1,600 million litres and Chennai’s 1,200 million litres.
Yadav said the Krishna River basin had recorded a 66 per cent water deficit and the Godavari basin a 44 per cent deficit. Hyderabad, Medchal and Ranga Reddy districts had received the lowest rainfall, he added.
He accused the BRS of politicising the emerging water crisis instead of supporting efforts to conserve water. He said Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy was alerting people to the potential crisis and urged the opposition not to exploit the situation for political gains. He also criticised the BJP and BRS for not raising concerns over the Centre’s assistance to the State.
Warning that the El Niño effect could affect both humans and animals, Yadav said shrinking water sources could force wild animals to enter human settlements, requiring public vigilance.
He also cautioned that rising temperatures could cause significant agricultural losses, particularly for paddy farmers, and urged farmers to consider alternative crops.
He called on the public to avoid wasting water and prepare for possible shortages in the coming months.
