Hande Erçel to front Germany-set drama ‘Diaspora’

Berlin, Oct 8 (UNI) Turkish actor Hande Erçel has been cast as the lead in Iranian filmmaker Nader Saeivar’s upcoming drama "Diaspora", which is set in Germany and is scheduled to begin filming in early 2027.
Erçel will play Merve, a middle-class Turkish woman who moves to Germany with her 12-year-old son after the death of her husband in Turkey. The film centres on their attempt to begin again while adapting to life in a new country.
Saeivar has written and will direct the film. Berlin-based director Saeivar, whose recent directorial credits include No End (2022), The Witness (2024) and Hijamat (2026), is also known internationally for his work with Jafar Panahi.
He shared an original screenplay Oscar nomination this year with Panahi for Cannes Palme d’Or winner "It Was Just An Accident", and has also collaborated with the director on a number of other works.
The 32-year-old actress will be joined in the cast by Moritz Bleibtreu as the father of the German family, with further international cast members due to be unveiled in the coming weeks, reports DEADLINE.
Produced jointly by Said Nur Akkus at Berlin-based Arthood Films and Emre Oskay at Istanbul-based Sky Films, Diaspora will take place entirely in Berlin, and the production will be in German, English, and Turkish. UNI NST SS
