Ex-Army man plotted cousin’s wife’s murder over failed land deal in Gurugram; three arrested

Gurugram, Oct 24 (UNI) A former Army serviceman allegedly hired two accomplices to murder his cousin’s 35-year-old wife in Gurugram after she blocked a land deal, with police revealing on Saturday that the killing was planned nearly seven weeks in advance and the attackers fled with jewellery after strangling her inside her home.
Gurugram Police said the prime accused, Sandeep, 35, who was dismissed from the Army following court-martial proceedings in 2023, allegedly masterminded the October 16 murder in Dauhla village after the victim persuaded her husband to cancel a land transaction and return an advance payment of Rs 1 lakh.
The Crime Branch has arrested Sandeep and his two accomplices, Anuj, 29, and Avnish, 30, and recovered stolen gold and silver jewellery, two motorcycles, a fake number plate and other articles allegedly used in the crime.
According to police, Sandeep wanted to facilitate the sale of land belonging to his cousin, the victim's husband. However, the woman opposed the transaction, arguing that the property was being sold below its value.
Investigators said Sandeep subsequently plotted her murder and recruited Anuj and Avnish, whom he knew through his earlier Army posting in Roorkee, Uttarakhand.
Police alleged that the three conducted reconnaissance of the victim's house on August 31 before executing their plan on October 16.
On the day of the murder, the accused initially approached the house but returned after finding the woman talking on her phone.
Around 10.05 a.m., Sandeep and Anuj allegedly entered the house while Avnish stood guard outside. The attackers tied the woman's hands, sealed her mouth with adhesive tape and strangled her, police said.
The murder was discovered around 2.30 p.m. when the victim's husband returned home with their children from school and found her lying motionless with her hands tied and mouth taped.
She was rushed to the government hospital in Sohna, where doctors declared her dead.
Sandeep was arrested from Sohna on October 19, while Anuj and Avnish were apprehended from Roorkee the following day.
Police said Sandeep had been dismissed from the Army in 2023 following allegations of fraud, including collecting money on the pretext of arranging jobs.
In the latest development, investigators recovered a gold ring, two gold tops, two gold earrings, a gold chain, 34 silver toe rings, two mobile phones, two motorcycles, a helmet, a fake number plate, adhesive tape, a bag and shoes following interrogation of the accused.
The three accused have been sent to judicial custody after police remand.
A case has been registered under Sections 103(1), 127(2), 332(a) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Sadar Sohna police station.
Further investigation is underway to establish the complete circumstances surrounding the killing and examine the recovered evidence.
