Farooq Abdullah calls Supreme Court verdict on Article 370 ‘wrong’

Srinagar, Oct 19 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Monday termed the 2023 Supreme Court verdict upholding the abrogation of Article 370 as “wrong”, reiterating his party’s commitment to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status and full statehood.
Addressing a workers convention in Arwah area of Beerwah constituency in Budgam district, , Abdullah said the National Conference would continue its struggle for the restoration of Articles 370 and 35A and the constitutional rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He argued that the Supreme Court had, in two earlier hearings, upheld Article 370’s permanent status, questioning its subsequent December 11, 2023, judgment that upheld the union government’s 2019 decision to abrogate the provision.
“The Supreme Court’s judgment on Article 370 was entirely wrong,” Abdullah said.
“The winds of change have begun to blow, and they are gathering speed,” Abdullah said, expressing confidence that the people of Jammu and Kashmir would eventually receive their rightful due.
The veteran politician said neither India nor Pakistan cares for people but is driven by its interest in the land of the region.
“Since India became independent, conspiracies have been hatched to wipe out this party and enslave people here. Neither that country (Pakistan) nor this country (India) has any love for us. Their only love is for this land. But you should not forget those martyrs who laid down their lives for this party,” Abdullah said.
Abdullah recalled his father and National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s historic speech at Lal Chowk, in which he said Maharaja Hari Singh’s aspirations for an independent country were derailed by the arrival of tribesmen from Pakistan in 1947.
He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir had endured difficult times and made significant sacrifices, with further hardships remaining uncertain. He urged people to follow the path of righteousness, strengthen their faith in God and extend support to the poor.
The National Conference president also targeted the Peoples Democratic Party, blaming it for bringing the BJP to Jammu and Kashmir through the 2015 coalition government. He said the National Conference had extended unconditional support to the PDP in 2014 and cautioned it against joining hands with the BJP.
“Had the PDP not brought the BJP to Jammu and Kashmir, Article 370 would not have been abrogated,” he said.
Abdullah questioned the delay in restoring statehood, recalling that assurances had been given regarding delimitation, elections and statehood. “Where have those promises gone? Why has statehood still not been restored even after two years?” he asked.
He also said National Conference MPs had met the union Home Minister in New Delhi in January this year and were assured that business rules clarifying the respective powers of the Lieutenant Governor and the elected government would be provided immediately. However, he said, the rules had not been delivered despite the passage of ten months.
