Father, son killed as building slabs collapse during construction in northeast Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) A 60-year-old man and his 33-year-old son were killed after two concrete slabs of a building collapsed during construction work to add another floor in northeast Delhi’s Harsh Vihar, police said on Monday.
The deceased, identified as Chanderpal (60) and his son Vijay Kumar (33), were residents of Gali No. 14 in Harsh Vihar. Both were trapped under the debris following the collapse at Milan Garden on Sewa Dham Road on Sunday evening. They were rescued during an overnight operation and rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.
According to police, information about the building collapse at A-4, Milan Garden, was received at Harsh Vihar police station at 6.46 pm on October 25. A police team immediately reached the spot and found that the ground-floor structure of an old building, reportedly used as a godown, had collapsed along with the first-floor structure above it.
Preliminary information suggests that the incident occurred while construction work was underway to add another floor to the existing building. A portion of the old roof reportedly gave way, triggering the collapse of the slab above it. The exact cause of the incident is being investigated.
Two fire brigade vehicles, as many ambulances and a crane, were deployed at the site. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with Delhi Police and Civil Defence personnel, joined the rescue operation. The teams cleared the rubble and searched for people feared trapped beneath the debris through the night.
The victims were eventually pulled out of the debris and taken to GTB Hospital, where they were declared dead.
Delhi Cabinet Ministers Kapil Mishra and Ashish Sood visited the site to review the situation and assess the rescue efforts.
Police said legal action under relevant provisions of law was being initiated, while further investigation was underway to establish the circumstances leading to the collapse.
