Former Bengal minister Indranil Sen arrested by Kolkata Police in UNESCO-linked Durga Puja ticket case

Kolkata, Oct 28 (UNI) Former West Bengal Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Indranil Sen was arrested by the Kolkata Police’s Detective Department on Wednesday in connection with an alleged fraud involving the unauthorised use of UNESCO’s name and logo to sell Durga Puja tickets.
Sen appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at the agency’s CGO Complex office at 1 pm after being summoned for questioning in connection with the case. He was taken into custody by the Kolkata Police at around 5.06 pm while leaving the premises.
The CGO Complex was cordoned off, with personnel from the Kolkata and Bidhannagar police commissionerates present. Kunal Agarwal, chief of the Detective Department, said Sen would be taken to Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters, for interrogation.
The case centres on allegations that an organisation named Mass Art, headed by Sen and his wife, Madhuchhanda, sold tickets for Durga Puja celebrations in 2023 and 2024 by allegedly misusing UNESCO’s name and logo. The tickets were reportedly priced between Rs 1,800 and Rs 12,000.
Following the alleged irregularities, a complaint was lodged at Bowbazar police station, prompting an investigation that was subsequently taken over by the Detective Department. The ED also launched a separate probe into the matter.
Investigators suspect that several crore rupees were collected through the ticket sales, but the accounting of the funds remains unclear. Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case and trace the money.
According to the allegations, Sen had repeatedly failed to respond to summons issued by the Kolkata Police to appear at Lalbazar, even as he appeared before the ED. He had also approached the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court seeking anticipatory bail, but his pleas were rejected. UNI BGA NST CDS
